What the Heck is Good Content Anyway?

Earlier this week, I talked about the importance of blog post frequency. If you’re not updating your blog regularly, it’s the first thing that sends me packing.

However, blog frequency means absolutely nothing if you don’t have good content to back it up. That’s why the very best blogs in the world offer killer content on a consistent basis.

If you spend any amount of time reading blogs, you’re likely to hear “content is king”. While that is most certainly true, trying to achieve truly great content is a lot easier said than done.

So, what the heck is good content anyway?

Although the content itself will vary widely depending on your readership, there are several universal ways to create killer content that’s begging to be read and shared.

Good content…

Solves a problem.

If your blog answers your readers’ burning questions, you will be a hero. Figure out what your readers need. Ask them about what they struggle with on a daily basis and use that to fuel your blog. Your readers will devour it.

Fills a need.

Sometimes, good content means writing about something that hasn’t been covered in your niche. If you want to stand out, find a hole in your niche and fill it. This is a great way to position yourself as a thought leader.

Tells a story.

Since the beginning of time, people have loved stories. The same holds true even though the medium has changed. People connect with stories and experiences. Be willing to share a little bit about yourself and allow your readers to get to know you a little bit better.

Inspires action.

Truly great blog posts are a catalyst for action. It could be something as simple as encouraging readers to comment on the post or something more significant like motivating readers to donate to a cause or make significant lifestyle changes. Whatever it is, if you can inspire your readers to take action as a result of your blog, you’ve definitely got great content.

Entertains.

Good content doesn’t always have to be serious. Sometimes, the content that spreads the fastest and farthest offers light-hearted quips or jaw-dropping entertainment. Let yourself shine and amaze readers by being unexpected, brilliant or hilarious.

Engages readers.

Sometimes, the best content on a blog is not in the post itself, but in the comments. Ask thought-provoking questions or take a firm stand on an issue and watch your comment section light up with an engaging, thoughtful debate. Encourage discussion to get your blog flying high.

What do you think makes great content? What is your biggest challenge in creating good content?
